  • Connecting Farmers to Traders with Sauti Soko

    Sauti Soko is a virtual marketplace platform which farmers and traders can dial to connect with buyers and sellers. Users across East Africa can dial a shortcode (e.g. *483*716# in Kenya) with any kind of phone, and without the need of internet. The increased accessibility for farmers and traders means that Sauti Soko can improve last-mile connectivity and market access for remote and border populations across East Africa.

  • A Cross Border Trade Reporting Experiment from Kenya Small-Scale Cross Border Trader, Corruption, and Mobile Phones

    Sauti is pleased to announce the publication of results from our research in partnership with UK Aid Direct, Busara Center for Behavioral Economics, and Columbia Climate School under the Global Integrity Anti-Corruption Evidence (GI-ACE) programme. The project explored incentives for corruption and harassment reporting and the feasibility of crowd-sourced data and mobile technologies to support community monitoring of border management. The project was supported by Sauti Collect, where we provided an end-to-end USSD data collection and management system, to collect gender-disaggregated and product-disaggregated data on corruption and harassment at informal borders.

    Emily Achieng Rayamo is both a retail trader and a social worker working with Pillars care farmers foundation in Migori. Emily comes from Suna eastward under Kakrao in Rayabhi village in Migori County, Kenya. The region is a large producer of sugarcane, sweet potatoes, maize, and beans. Emily’s primary source of income is retail trade in agricultural commodities including cereals and vegetables. She has had her business for four years.
