Sauti East Africa Launches Usheeg in Somalia
Sauti East Africa, in partnership with IOM Somalia, has launched Usheeg, a mobile information platform providing displaced and marginalized women traders in Beledweyne and Jowhar with free, real-time access to essential services and market data.
Across Somalia, women and youth traders face persistent challenges: limited access to reliable market data, vulnerability to exploitation by brokers and money changers, and exposure to climate risks such as drought and flooding. These barriers undermine their ability to trade safely and profitably.
Usheeg addresses these challenges directly by providing an easily accessible mobile-based resource that they can access the information they need to work safely and get the protection services they need.
A Platform Built for Accessibility
By dialing *567# from any kind of phone with access to the Hormuud network, traders can access Usheeg and access:
- Market prices updated daily from trusted sources such as FAO FSNAU
- Weather forecasts and early warnings from ICPAC, SWALIM, and OCHA
- Exchange rates for key regional and international currencies
- Protection and social services including gender-based violence support and referrals
The service operates entirely via USSD and SMS, requiring no internet connection or smartphone, and is available in local Somali dialects and English. This ensures inclusive access to information across diverse user groups.
Impact in the First Month
In its first four weeks of implementation, Usheeg has achieved measurable reach and adoption:
๐ 3,748 traders trained, 70% women and 24% youth
๐ 11,622 unique users reached across Beledweyne and Jowhar
๐ 11 key markets covered with real-time trade, protection, and climate data
๐ป Radio campaigns broadcast nationwide, extending awareness to thousands more
Why It Matters
Access to accurate, timely information enables traders to negotiate confidently, adapt to climate variability, and identify safe options for accessing services. By strengthening decision-making and reducing exposure to risks, Usheeg is helping to enhance market efficiency, resilience, and economic opportunities for Somali traders.
Next Steps
Building on the initial launch, Sauti East Africa and IOM Somalia will:
-
Expand Usheegโs coverage to additional markets across Somalia
-
Integrate new data streams on food supply, climate, and social services
-
Continue user testing and feedback sessions to ensure platform relevance and effectiveness
-
Scale outreach through radio, posters, and trusted local networks
The goal is to establish Usheeg as a trusted, accessible, and sustainable information platform for Somaliaโs traders and communities.
