Improving equitable access to climate-related information

Sauti is excited to announce a partnership with International Climate Initiative (IKI) Small Grants Programme to create equitable access to climate-related information and adaptation tools for women farmers. Sauti will be receiving 127,400 euros of IKI funding.

Sauti East Africa is proud to join the world in celebrating Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day. The United Nations has declared June 27th as international MSME day in order to recognize the economic contributions of MSMEs – particularly the economic empowerment of women and youth – in order to support sustainable development across the globe.

Connecting Farmers to Traders with Sauti Soko

Sauti Soko is a virtual marketplace platform which farmers and traders can dial to connect with buyers and sellers. Users across East Africa can dial a shortcode (e.g. *716# in Kenya) with any kind of phone, and without the need of internet. The increased accessibility for farmers and traders means that Sauti Soko can improve last-mile connectivity and market access for remote and border populations across East Africa.

Introducing Sauti Trade Insights – Data From 60,000+ East African Traders

Up-to-date and representative data on East Africa’s domestic and cross-border traders is difficult to find. Sauti’s new Trade Insights data portal crowdsources data on East Africa’s traders at an unprecedented scale to help researchers, practitioners, and policy makers improve their intervention targeting, program reach, and solution design.

A Cross Border Trade Reporting Experiment from Kenya Small-Scale Cross Border Trader, Corruption, and Mobile Phones

Sauti is pleased to announce the publication of results from our research in partnership with UK Aid Direct, Busara Center for Behavioral Economics, and Columbia Climate School under the Global Integrity Anti-Corruption Evidence (GI-ACE) programme. The project explored incentives for corruption and harassment reporting and the feasibility of crowd-sourced data and mobile technologies to support community monitoring of border management. The project was supported by Sauti Collect, where we provided an end-to-end USSD data collection and management system, to collect gender-disaggregated and product-disaggregated data on corruption and harassment at informal borders.

Sauti’s Data in the UNCTAD Economic Development in Africa Report 2021

UNCTAD’s recently launched Economic Development in Africa Report 2021 features Sauti’s activities providing Trade and Market Information Platforms throughout East Africa. We are excited to be featured in this assessment of how the region can inclusively benefit from the trade potential under the incoming African Continental Free Trade Area. The report draws on demographic, market, and trade insights from our TradeInsights Data Portal covering East Africa’s cross-border trade context.

Building Food Security Resilience Through Market Access for Small Scale Traders and Farmers

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a global economic recession which has resulted in a dramatic loss of livelihoods and income on a global scale. Given the outsized impact on food insecurity throughout Africa, the resulting drop in purchasing power among those who lost income has had a major impact especially for those populations that were already vulnerable. In particular, those in the informal economy are most affected.

Non-profit, civil societies, multinational companies, and citizens work with community radios on various social and economic issues ranging from poverty, agriculture, gender inequality, education, and marketing among others.
