The platform was first released in Kenya and Uganda in 2017 with the East African Sub Regional Support Initiative for the Advancement of Women (EASSI). It was designed to empower women cross-border traders in “low-technology” and periphery areas of Kenya and Uganda to trade legally, profitably, and safely across East African borders.

Market Monitoring and Predictive Modelling Information Platforms

Sauti has been working on a market monitoring and predictive modelling project with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) in order to improve access to previously-hard-to-gather market prices. As part of this project, Sauti also successfully piloted a USSD virtual marketplace to improve market linkages of traditionally excluded businesses.

However, many women cross-border traders in “low-technology” areas face a number of barriers to accessing this information. Sauti deployed a mobile-based information platform to empower women cross-border traders in “low-technology” and periphery areas of Kenya and Uganda to trade legally, profitably, and safely across East African borders.

Feasibility Study on the Construction of a New Kenyan Cross-Border Market

Sauti was enlisted to carry out a feasibility study for the construction of a new cross-border market in Kenya. The aim of the study was to identify the needs of different stakeholders to inform the design, construction and operations of the market. With the use of Sauti’s research consulting services, as well as the Sauti Collect data collection tool, we were able to provide a scalable and comprehensive data collection solution to identify the varying needs of the market stakeholders.
